Getting There

Getting to Vientiane
By air: Vientiane-Wattay International Airport is the country’s main air gateway providing the easiest way into the city from Thailand and Vietnam. Connections with Bangkok are offered by Thai Airways and Lao Airlines while connections with Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi offered by Laos Airlines and Vietnam Airlines. Laos Airlines also maintains a route between Luang Prabang and Vientiane.
By bus: if you’re already in Laos then you can take a bus all the way from Luang Prabang (in the far north) to Vientiane via Vang Vieng or if at Vang Vieng already, you can pick up the same service for the four hour journey to Vientiane. From Nong Khai in Thailand you can cross into Laos via the Friendship Bridge. Just past Thai immigration, you’ll find shuttle buses that will take you across the border for about 20 baht. It’s not possible to cross the bridge on foot so visitors are obliged to make use of these services. through undulating regions.
By road: there aren’t really any options for getting to Vientiane by road independently and visitors are advised to make use of the country’s public and tourist transportation systems.
