Trekking: Luang Prabang is a good place from which to explore the jungle-covered northern Laos. You will find several companies in the city centre offering organised trekking tours into the largely uninhabited mountainous regions. Indigenous tribes situated sporadically around the area welcome visitors and unlike other Southeast Asian countries, they display very little evidence of development.
Cycling: plenty of businesses around the city centre offer bicycle hire, giving backpackers the chance to take group or solo trips around the town and the surrounding area. Get a real feel for Luang Prabang by seeing those places that might be too far out to reach on foot and might not be included on organised tour itineraries.
Eating out: the city’s many and varied eating establishments are open from dawn through until dusk meaning that you can stop for a bite to eat any time you fancy. Take the opportunity to try a noodle soup or one of the other local delicacies and wash it down with a bottle of icy-cold Beer Lao, a cup of strong, sweet coffee or a glass of traditional Lao-French wine.
