Royal Palace Museum: this is the city’s only museum facility and is a grand building that, as the name suggests, formerly served as the country’s Royal Palace. The building, which is located opposite Phu Si hill, dates back to 1904 but is built on the site of a much older palace. After the country’s capital was moved to Vientiane, the palace became a government building, then around 20 years later in 1995; it was opened to the public as a museum.
Inside are many fascinating sights including the king's reception hall, the chief secretary's reception area, the queen's reception room and the throne hall. The main compound in the palace contains a theatre where evening performances are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
