Situated on the Mekong River in the northern region of central Laos, Luang Prabang is a small city that was formerly the country’s capital. Lying some 425kms north of the present capital, Vientiane, Luang Prabang is a fraction of its successor’s size and home to a significantly smaller population with just 22,000 permanent residents.
