Following the departure of the Nan-chao, Chanthaphanit from Xay Fong moved in to control the area having been forced out of his own seat of control by the Khmers. Under Chanthaphanit’s ruling, the city became known as Xieng Dong Xieng Thong. The Khmers later extended their control over the region, establishing supremacy in Xieng Dong Xieng Thong and a period of rule from 1185 to 1191 ensued.
In 1353, Xieng Dong Xieng Thong was declared the capital of Lan Xang, a status which it held for over two centuries until 1560 when King Setthathirath I decided to make what was then known as Vien Chang, the country’s capital. Vien Chang later became known as Vientiane and is still the country’s capital today. When Lan Xang became a disparate entity in the early 18h century, Luang Prabang city was established as the seat of the independent Luang Prabang kingdom.
