The alternative is to rent a bicycle and expend a little energy or rent a car with a driver who will be happy to take you wherever you choose within reason. The local pick-up vehicles known as jumbos can also be hired to take you out of the city to destinations of your choice.
Kuang Si Falls: are situated about 30kms south of Luang Prabang and the journey there is a scenic one taking you through hill tribe villages along the way. Once at the waterfall, you’ll find trails that you can follow which take you higher and higher up to various different levels with pools available at some levels in which swimming and diving are possible.
Pak Ou Caves: are situated about 25kms up river from the city centre and can be reached by taking transportation from any of the many establishments around the Xiang Thong road area. Once the road part of the journey is over, it’s a two hour boat ride which takes you to both the upper and lower portions of the caves.
Inside, you can view some of the interesting rock formations as well as a variety of Buddha icons left behind from the days when the caves were used as prayer centres. There’s a small fee to enter the caves which may or may not be included in the price charged by the company who transported you.
