Attractions in Luang Prabang
Wat Xieng Thong: was built in the 16th century and is one of the cities oldest and most beautiful wats. You’ll find it situated at the point where the Mekong and Khan rivers converge and consequently it’s set against a very scenic backdrop. The Wat is comprised of several separate temple buildings which are ornately decorated on the outside and contain traditional Buddhist icons on the inside.
Wat Pa Pai: is one of the less visited of the city’s interesting buildings and is a good place to escape the backpacker masses and to observe local monks engaged in their daily affairs. You’ll find some of the monks at this temple capable of speaking English and as it’s a little off the regular tourist circuit, they tend to be more amiable towards visitors.
Wat Mai: is perhaps the city’s biggest and grandest temple and one which gets the most visitors of both the package tourist and backpacker variety. A small entrance fee is charged which permits you access to the interior where some ornate Buddhist decor and iconography awaits. The temple is situated on the way that leads up the Phu Si Hill on Sisavangvong Road.
Night Market: it’s no grand affair but still very much worth a visit all the same and generally attracts a good number of tourists looking for souvenirs and wanting to sample some of the interesting food on offer. If you haven’t already bought the famous Beer Lao t-shirt, then this is the place to pick one up.
Ban Chan: is a small village located across the Mekong River, just a short distance from Luang Prabang. It is well known for producing various clay works including figurines, flower and plant pots and urns. Visitors can view the villagers who are engaged in the pottery making process and have the chance to buy various goods before leaving.
