Introduction to Vientiane - Outskirts
Vientiane is the capital and economic centre of Laos. Set alongside the mighty Mekong River, it has an atmosphere more typical of a sleepy provincial town than a bustling Asian capital. However, it’s worth spending a couple of nights in one of the hotels in Vientiane before discovering more of this delightful country. Most visitors to the city head straight to Thanon Settathirat and the side streets leading off it, where most of the tourist amenities are located. Fewer people visit in the wet season (June to September), with the October to May dry season being preferable. Key sights in the Laos capital include Patuxai, also known as Victory Gate, and Wat Si Saket, the city’s oldest Buddhist temple. For insight into the country’s history, tour the fascinating Lao National Museum, which houses an original 'jar’ from the Plain of Jars.
