Introduction to Vang Vieng - Riverside
Halfway between the popular Laos tourist spots of Luang Prabang and Vientiane is the fun and frivolous riverside town of Vang Vieng. Mostly populated by backpackers making their way across Southeast Asia, this town is a great stopover on the long bumpy travel circuit in Laos. The main activity in this sleepy hideaway is tubing down the local river, a lazy stretch of water ideal for an afternoon float. Kayaking is another way to do the river if you want something more active. Surrounded by towering limestone karsts, Vang Vieng is one of the prettier places in Laos. The cliffs here are riddled with caves, adding another excursion to travellers' agendas. The river is the focal point of town, with dozens of Vang Vieng Riverside hotels spread out along it. Most of them are cheap bungalow affairs, but head just out of town a little and there are some comfortable bungalow resorts.
