Introduction to Savannakhet, Laos
Holding down the fort in southern Laos is the sleepy and surprisingly alluring town of Savannakhet. It may be the second-largest town in the country but nothing moves too fast around here. The downtown core is a fantastic melange of slightly weathered French colonial buildings and Buddhist temples, interspersed with a few vapid concrete reminders that this is not Luang Prabang. Savannakhet is a major transport hub between Thailand to the east and Vietnam to the west, so many travellers find themselves stopping over along the way to the gloriously untrammeled south of Laos or when jumping between the neighbouring countries. Savannakhet hotels are mainly budget guesthouses catering to travellers on the move, but they’re a great base for excursions into the exotic mountains to the west. Mill around the central Plaza to see what’s going on and admire the architecture. Be sure to linger on the banks of the mighty Mekong River for a sunset beer Lao at one of the many little restaurants and bars at the northern end of town. It doesn’t get rowdy in Savannakhet, but this cool and quiet outpost has loads of potential for contemplative travel.other spellings: savannakhethotels, savanakhet hote, savannaket hotell, savannakhat otel, savannaget hotle
