Introduction to Champasak - Pakse
Pakse is the largest and most important town in the south of Laos. Many tourists pass through it to get to the Bolevan Plateau, but there is enough here to keep visitors occupied for a few days. Wat Luang is worth visiting for lovers of culture, as it is the grandest temple in the region. It is possible to stay in Wat Phu, another temple, which is only a short journey away from Pakse. Many tourists enjoy renting a motorbike and heading east from the town to visit waterfalls including Tad Sae, where it is possible to swim and find a decent meal nearby. Back in Champasak's Pakse, Talat Dao Heuang, a market, attracts visitors with its local produce and handmade souvenirs which are representative of the region. Pakse hotels are usually quite basic, although there is one larger hotel which caters to the upscale traveller. The town has an array of local and international cuisine, and its colonial legacy means it is possible to find some great French bakeries.
