Introduction to Kuwait City - Salmiya
Salmiya is a thriving, contemporary city that is situated besides the translucent waters of the Persian Gulf. It is around 12kms from the centre of Kuwait City and 15kms from Kuwait International Airport. Salmiya was largely destroyed in the first Gulf War but has been rebuilt. Central thoroughfares such as Salem Al-Mubarak Street boast modern shopping centres while the backstreets have retained a traditional atmosphere and feature souk shopping where buyers haggle over the price of gold or fabrics. Al Bhajat Street is the promenade that runs around the headland that Salmiya is sited on. The bulk of Salmiya hotels are situated either on the promenade or just back from it. Ras Al Ardh is at the tip of the headland and home to the Scientific Centre. This facility boasts a huge aquarium where reef sharks and rays are among the diverse species. Other areas in the centre are the Desert and Discovery zones.
