The water is undrinkable, even in Amman. Visitors to Jordan are recommended to bring medicine to treat stomach ailments and diarrhoea, although most people escape the need for strong antibiotics when struck down.
Hospitals are of a good standard in cities and towns but health services are scarce in more remote areas, as in any country. Most health facilities will require payment in cash even if the patient holds valid travel insurance – these details will have to be worked out later so make sure to hold on to all receipts and doctors’ notes.
Travellers are advised to bring urgent medical supplies with them but can be reassured that cities are well-covered by modern pharmacies, meaning most medicines are readily available.
