Sightseeing: with its long history and wealth of Roman remains, Amman is a good starting point for any sightseeing tour of Jordan. Head up to the citadel on the hill for the best collection of ruins, temples and exhibitions in the city before venturing out to the city’s striking mosques dotted around old and new Amman.
Shopping: with its glitzy malls and old bazaars Jordan is a shopper’s dream with tax-free purchases available for all tourists on departure – sales tax is 16 per cent.
Horseback riding: Amman offers keen horseback riders a number of options, most notably the Princess Alia Riding Centre at the Hussein Sports Club, the Arabian Horse Club beside the Airport Highway and the Country Riding Centre of Jordan in Jelad.
The latter is particularly worth a visit for those that want to escape the city, as it features cross-country riding on forest and hill trails.
Walks in this area can also take in a number of small villages including Iraq al-Emir, or the Caves of the Prince.
