Museums & Galleries in Amman
Many of the museums on offer are therefore archaeology and Islam centric although this is increasingly changing. The art scene in Amman is also on the rise but the pinnacle of the city’s art scene remains the National Gallery of Fine Arts, home to one of the most extensive collections of Islamic art in the world.
Archaeological Museum: housed overlooking Amman on Citadel Hill, this stunning collection of antiquities includes the Dead Sea bronze scroll featuring Aramaic script and a collection of 8,000-year-old plaster statues from Ain Ghazal.
National Gallery of Fine Arts: with artwork collected from more than 40 predominantly Muslim nations from Malaysia to Yemen, this large museum holds one of the largest collections of Islamic art in the world. Many of the exhibits have been shown throughout Europe’s most prestigious galleries and look particularly fine at home here.
Jebel Al-Weibdeh. Open: 09:00 to 19:00, closed Fri and Tue.
Royal Automobile Museum: cars have never been so revealing as they are shown here. This wonderful exhibition traces the lives of Jordan’s rulers King Abdullah 1 and King Abdullah II through the cars that were offered as gifts and were driven by the monarchs themselves at various points right from the beginning of the country at the end of World War I until the present day.
King Hussein Park. Open: 10:00 to 19:00 (21:00 in summer), closed Fri and Tue.
Jordan Museum of Popular Tradition: features a random array of artefacts related to the Jordanian way of life. The highlight is the fine display of intricate jewellery, while clothing is also prominent along with mosaics and other ornate architectural designs.
Roman Theatre: Open: 08:00 to 16:00 (from 10:00 to 16:00 on Fri).
Numismatics Museum Central Bank of Jordan: this fascinating collection of coins used in and around Jordan throughout the ages features currency dating back to 400 years before Christ. Roman, Greek and numerous other pieces from the major powers that passed through the Middle East are prominent.
Central Bank: Open: 10:00 to 17:00, closed Fri and Tue.
