March Festivals
International Amman Theatre Festival: held annually in March, this new festival lasts about 10 days until the beginning of April and features a series of theatrical performances at Amman’s Royal Cultural Centre.
July Festivals
Souk Azaz: a popular summer music festival beginning around the middle of July rotated between Amman and nearby Jerash. Featuring acts from Jordan and farther afield, this festival carries on for a whole month. Most performances are held during the evenings.
August Festivals
Amman Short Film Festival: relatively new, this is a chance for Jordan’s independent film-making community to showcase its talent, and the standard has reached a high level. Films are shown over a week-long period in the capital sometime every August.
December Festivals
Christmas: 25 December is a holiday in Jordan and the main festival of the country’s Christian minority when presents are given and received, with Amman in particular decked out with abundant decorations. The days beforehand see the shops get busy in preparation for the holiday, which sometimes even sees snow.
Many shops and other public buildings may be closed for greater periods during this time and restaurants in particular may be closed up early. Despite the good behaviour, decorations are prominent.
Eid ul-Fitr: marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, Eid is a festival of feasting and prayers in which Muslims celebrate their ability to remain pious throughout the past 30 days. The main day rotates between praying and eating while all dressed up in a special outfit.
