Introduction to Petra, Jordan
Petra is situated on Mt Hor, in the southwest region of Jordan, 30kms from the Israeli border. It is home to one of the most famous historical sites in the world - the ruins of a Nabataean and later Roman city that are today a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city's name translates as stone. The archaeological park hidden by Wadi Musa's majestic red-tinged rock formations is home to the Urn Tombs, the Monastery (Ad Deir) and the most famous of the buildings for its grand facade, the Treasury (Al Khazneh). A trek through the park is like taking a trip back into historic times. The ancient site is the primary reason for visiting this region. There is no accommodation inside the complex, with most Petra hotels located a few hundred metres east, with further options a little farther, near National Highway 35. Dining options in Petra include hotel restaurants and traditional eateries that serve local specialities such as khobez bread and mansaf, a lamb dish. Shopping is not Petra's main draw, although shops sell the ubiquitous Arab kefiya headscarves and gaily painted sand bottles as well as travellers' sundry items. Visit our Petra Travel Guide
