Introduction to Madaba - City Centre
Madaba's long 3,000-year plus history lies beneath just about every inch of this ancient city south of Amman, quite literally. Known as the 'City of Mosaics', Madaba has a number of fine ancient artefacts lying buried beneath its historic buildings, with excavation work thought to have uncovered only a fraction of what it has to offer. Still, with the St George Greek Orthodox church and its astonishing Byzantine mosaic map dating back to the 6th century, there are plenty of relics on display. Madaba City Centre hotels generally come in the cosy, family-run variety that fit well with the general laid-back ambiance of the city, although newer mid-range options mean the accommodation here is slowly evolving. For a whirlwind tour of the best of the mosaics on offer, head to the Madaba Museum, which also features fine examples from outside this charming and mostly unspoilt ancient city.
