Amman - take a day trip to Jerash
Possibly the best Roman ruins in the Middle East can be found at Jerash, a short trip from Amman. Here you can see and walk round an entire city with its giant columns, spectacular theatre and ancient temples. One of the more spectacular parts of the city is Hadrian’s Arch which was built to commemorate the emperor’s stay in the city. There are frequently shows held here when actors dress in period clothing and in July the temple is home to the Jerash Festival where there are lavish art performances held.Petra - hiking up to the Monastery is well worth the effort
There is so much to see at Petra you could be forgiven for not getting to see the Monastery, but for those that make the effort it so rewarding. The Treasury near the entrance to the extensive site, is better known and was made famous in the Indiana Jones movie. However the Monastery is more complete, with better stone engravings and exotic archways. Standing at its entrance it is almost impossible to believe that it was built so many years ago, as it is so large. Mostly land-locked Jordan's biggest draw is the magnificent 'Rose-Red City' of Petra, set in Wadi Musa and carved 2,500 years ago by the Nabataeans from the living pink limestone rock.The country's capital, Amman, is the best base for exploration of the many ancient sites and landmarks, although the city itself-a bustling metropolis aimed at high-end spenders-has little to see.
The rest of the country, however, is a delight for history buffs, with everything from 12th century Crusader and Ottoman castles to Roman ruins and ancient towns.
Wadi Rum is a famous oasis inhabited by formerly nomadic tribes, displaying their traditional culture and way of life.
Western-style Jordan hotels are mostly located in the capital, ranging from upscale to local lodgings at the affordable end of the scale.
Outside the capital, Western-style accommodation is more difficult to find, but staying in a Bedouin village in a traditional tent is much more fun.
The country is a fascinating destination for nature and eco buffs, with four nature reserves and dramatic scenery ranging from arid deserts to rugged peaks, the Dead Sea and the Great Rift Valley of the River Jordan.
