Introduction to Al Aqaba, Jordan
The city of Aqaba is located on the Red Sea gulf of the same name, opposite the Israeli resort of Eilat. The city is located just 20kms north of Jordan's border with Saudi Arabia. As well as being one of the globe's premier diving destinations, it is the only sea port in Jordan. Aqaba was first inhabited 6,000 years ago. In the city museum, a Roman milestone that denoted the start of the Via Traiana Nova is among the many artefacts. There is a choice of Aqaba hotels on the seafront and the adjacent King Hussein Street. Choosing one of these establishments allows guests to reach beaches such as Al Hafayer and swim out to the nearest coral reefs. Visitors can join dive cruises to more distant destinations as there are a number of dive shops here. This area of the city is fairly modern and offers shops that sell beachwear and unique holiday mementoes. Local eateries serve up national dishes such as the delicious mansaf, a lamb, yoghurt and rice dish. The legendary Wadi Rum's stunning terrain is an easy daytrip away. People making this trip can take a camel or trek there.Visit our Al Aqaba Travel Guide
