Cherry blossoms: if you want to see Tokyo looking unbelievably beautiful and Japanese, then get here at the end of March for the cherry blossom season, a hugely popular time for tourists. The best places to see the much prized blossoms are around the Imperial Palace or indeed in any public park in the city.
Eating out: Tokyo might be pricey but getting hold of good food need not be. Noodle shops and conveyor-belt sushi joints offer good value and if you want to try something a little fancier, there is always fashionable, upmarket Ginza. Wherever you go, the food is usually good and there is always something new and tasty to try.
Nightclubbing: a night out dancing in Tokyo is not to be missed if you’re a clubbing fan. The venues here are large, with multiple bars and dance floors and some of the best DJs in the world constantly dropping into the city. For the very best try Ageha close to Shin-Kiba station – they even have a pool dance area and water bar.
Pachinko: those contraptions that look like pinball machines from space found everywhere in Tokyo, and the rest of the country for that matter, are in fact Pachinko, the enduring craze in Japan that pre-dates WWII. If you want to try and win money and prizes at Pachinko, then head to Shibuya’s fashionable Centre Gai district.
