Other less expensive options in Shibuya include Nonbei-yokocho, a narrow street with little bars, some of which have been operating here for over 50 years; so the area has some history as well as cheap Japanese whiskey.
For nightclubs, Shibuya offers a full range of varied and hugely popular venues such as Womb and Club Atom. The entrance fee for many of the top night spots here runs into thousands of yen per person and does not usually include a drink; however, the fee is often lower if you get in before midnight.
Other good places to head to after dark include Shinjuku, a notorious red-light area crawling with prostitutes and strip clubs; and then farther south lies Shinjuku ni-chome, the biggest gay nightspot in Tokyo.
Golden Gai is another favourite nearby, an area of tiny and very quirky little bars in a former red light district that has turned into something of a tourist attraction in recent years but which retains a certain off-beat charm and lots of karaoke numbers. The welcome here can be a little frosty, so if you don’t get handed the microphone when it should be your song, you know it’s time to find a drink elsewhere.
