By train: Japan has an excellent rail network and there is a choice of services available. The quickest way to reach Nagasaki from Tokyo is by taking the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Hakata station and then transferring to another train. The total journey time is 8 hours. Overnight sleeper services run between Nagasaki, Kyoto and Osaka.
By bus: the cheapest and slowest option is to take one of the long distance bus services that run between all of the major cities. There are several private companies that operate on the main routes, helping to keep fares low. Seat reservations are necessary and can be made at bus terminals and travel agents. Overnight services operate on the longer journeys and the buses are comfortable and spacious.
