Peace Park (Heiwa Kœen): located a few kilometres outside of the city in Urakami, this attractive park commemorates the city's destruction by the atomic bomb in 1945. The main attraction is the 10-metre-tall Peace Statue created by local sculptor, Seibou Kitamura.
The statue's right hand points to the heavens to signify the threat of nuclear weapons; while the left arm is raised horizontally to symbolise eternal peace. The park also houses the Atomic Bomb Museum that has exhibitions documenting the horrors of 1945.
