If you’re looking for a scenic option though, it’s best to take the train – with the journey from Tokyo lasting just 4 hours through lovely countryside.
By train: if you are travelling to Hiroshima from another part of Japan, the bullet train is a good option as the city lies on the Shinkansen line. Hiroshima can be reached from Tokyo in just 4 hours, while Okayama is 40 minutes away and Shin-Osaka, 90 minutes. There are also local trains that are cheaper but slower.
By boat: it’s possible to take a boat to Hiroshima from Matsuyama on Shikoku. Travel time is just 1 hour, 10 minutes by high-speed boat; or if you go by slow boat it will take 2 hours, 40 minutes. Boats also go from Beppu on Kyushu, with a trip time of 3 hours, 20 minutes.
By air: Hiroshima Airport has both domestic and international flights. There are daily flights from Bangkok, Shanghai, Seoul, Taipei, Dalian, as well as numerous Japanese cities. The airport can be reached by bus in approximately 50 minutes. There is a smaller airport the southwest of the city centre, Hiroshima Nishi-Airport, which has flights to Kagoshima and Miyazaki.
