Though largely unknown to most foreigners, the Japanese seaside resort town of Atami, in Shizuoka prefecture, is hugely popular with domestic tourists, thanks to the therapeutic and relaxing benefits of the hot springs. Visitors have been heading to this spa town since the 8th century and, although modern development has erased much of the old charm, it still ranks as one of the country's three greatest hot springs. Hotels in Atami are perfectly placed for those looking to enjoy the hot springs here, with their natural streams bubbling up from the earth. In addition to these wonderful natural attractions, there is a lovely sandy beach (which unfortunately can get a little busy in the summer) and many other attractions. Two of the biggest cultural destinations are the MOA Museum of Modern Art, which is easy to reach, and the Hihokan, an erotic museum which is a giggle but a little on the expensive side.
