Introduction to Shiga - Otsu
The city of Otsu is the capital of Shiga Prefecture in Japan. Otsu is a great city to visit, with plenty of attractions for visitors. The Buddhist Enryaku-ji Temple is 1,200 years old and a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are over 200 buildings here set in a beautiful forest. The temple has an eternal flame called Fumetsu-No-Ho. Lake Biwa, just outside the city, is set in spectacular scenery and is a popular place for bird watching. Other activities at the lake include fishing, boating and even scuba diving. There are many hiking trails in the area surrounding the lake and many temples to visit including Gichu-ji and Ishiyama-dera temples, the former being the burial site of a famous Japanese poet. The two-day Otsu festival in October every year has a large procession of floats with Japanese drummers, traditional costumes, red lanterns and mechanical marionettes. The city has many excellent Otsu hotels as well as Japanese and international restaurants.
