Introduction to Sapporo - Chitose
The city of Chitose is situated in Sapporo, on the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan. Chitose hosts New Chitose International Airport and is the gateway to Hokkaido. Shikotsu-Toya National Park is the most popular attraction in Hokkaido and is just 36kms away from the centre of Chitose. The park contains the beautiful Shikotsu Lake and Toya Lake, which are caldera lakes situated on the Ring of Fire. The park is popular with hikers as the scenery is spectacular and there are active volcanoes. Noboribetsu and Jozankei are two resort towns, and visitors come here to enjoy the town's hot springs. There are regular bus services connecting Chitose to the national park, and the journey takes approximately 50 minutes depending on traffic. There is a good selection of Chitose hotels scattered throughout the city, which makes this an ideal place for visitors to the national park to stay.
