Introduction to Saga, Japan
A small region boasting impressive natural beauty and much history, the prefecture of Saga is located in Japan's far south, at the northern end of the island of Kyushu. The ancient feudal town of Karatsu, which sits by the sea, enjoys a fine blend of historic and modern aspects. The local pottery is famous and the impressive castle provides outstanding views, especially when the cherry trees are in bloom in March and April. November sees the prefecture host a huge international hot-air balloon festival, making this another hot month to visit, though hotels in Saga will obviously be busier than normal at this time. The Yayoi period can be revisited at the amazing moat-surrounded Yoshinogari Historical Park. The region's history in the Edo/Meiji period is illustrated at Saga City Castle History Museum. Yet more history can be enjoyed at Nagoya Castle Museum. Natural attractions abound, from the shallow Ariake Sea to the pine forests and Nanatsugama Caves at Karatsu City. The local airport has flights to Osaka and Tokyo, Japan's excellent expressways join the island with Honshu, and the high-speed railway puts Tokyo about two hours away.
