The Japanese city of Odawara, located on the coast of Kanagawa prefecture, is popular with tourists thanks to its range of attractions as well as its proximity to the hot springs of Hakone and Japan's famous Mount Fuji. Though Odawara Castle is an impressive building and the city's number-one tourist attraction, it's actually a reconstruction from the 1960s. The city is famous for its Ume plums, particularly those in pickled form, and many shops sell these local delicacies. Every year around February, the annual Ume plum festival is held to celebrate the blossoming of the fruit trees' flowers. This is an ideal time of year to see the area. Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, home to the country's most scenic mountain, is close by and absolutely must not be missed when visiting the city. The hot springs of Hakone are another major attraction, and travelling here on the scenic mountain railway only adds to the experience. The closest airports are those serving Tokyo. The railway station is easily reached from hotels in Odawara and the shinkansen high-speed service puts central Tokyo just one hour away.
