Introduction to Nagasaki, Japan
Nagasaki, as with Hiroshima, is famous for being the site of a WWII nuclear bomb attack. Around 100,000 people were killed in the city when the US dropped their second nuclear bomb. The Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum commemorate those that perished. Before WWII, this port city was an important trading port and port of entry for foreigners into Japan. This history has given a unique feel and architecture to the city. Glover Garden is an example of this, with many European homes that belonged to foreign diplomats and traders having been re-located to this area. Shofukuji Temple is an excellent example of Ming Dynasty architecture, having been built by Chinese immigrants in the 17th century. Oura Catholic Church was built in the 19th century and is the oldest standing church in Japan. Those travelling with children will enjoy a day out at the amazing Penguin Aquarium. Nagasaki hotels are aplenty, with most located along the shore and railway line.Visit our Nagasaki Travel Guide
