Introduction to Miyagi, Japan
Miyagi prefecture is in the Tohoku region in the northeast of Japan's Honshu Island. Located along the island's Pacific coast, the prefecture is lined by tall mountains to the west, with the capital city of Sendai sitting in a large central plain. The regional economy is an interesting mix of traditional agriculture and fishing but is dominated by industrial production, primarily appliances, electronics and processed foods. One of the big historical attractions, the ruins of Aoba Castle, is found in the hills above Sendai. Akiu Hot Spring, next to the Natori River outside of Sendai, is considered one of Japan's three best Oshu hot springs. One of the holiest places in the region is found at Kinkasan Island, off Oshika Peninsula. Another big island attraction is the Mastushima group of islands. Their striking pine-covered rocky forms have inspired great poems and are considered among the finest views in the country. They are located in Matsushima Bay, another of the region's stunning natural attractions. Hotels in Myagi are easy to reach thanks to excellent transport links. Several fast toll roads and expressways join the area with other parts of the country, and the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train puts Tokyo just two hours away. The March 2011 earthquake and tsunami caused much damage to the area but rail services have resumed. other spellings: miyagihotels, meyagi otel, meyagi hotell, meyagi hote, meyagi hotes
