Introduction to Mie - Yokkaichi
Yokkaichi is a city in Mie Prefecture in Japan. The city is a manufacturing centre that produces cars, textiles, tea and computers. It has been a market town since the medieval period because of its port. The port is well worth visiting, especially at sunrise when the view over the hills of the Chita Peninsula is spectacular. It is possible to take a trip around the harbour on the Inaba ferry. The city has a number of excellent and fun festivals. The Big Yokkaichi Festival occurs every August and sees Japanese drummers and a traditional costume parade through the streets. The Banko Festival is held in May each year. The roads are filled with merchants selling Banko ceramics, which make ideal souvenirs. There are many Yokkaichi hotels in the city, close to transport links to the city's main attractions.
