Introduction to Hokkaido - Asahikawa
Asahikawa is a city on the island of Hokkaido in the north of Japan. The city is famous for its Asahiwaka Zoo. The main event at the zoo is the Penguin Parade. About 10 penguins are paraded around the zoo much to amusement of its visitors. The zoo has over 800 animals, including polar bears, big cats, orang-utans and seals. There are also highly entertaining shows at the zoo. Other attractions in the city include the skiing and snowboarding slopes which are open during the winter. These are in the Taisetsu Mountains which are just on the edge of the city and are considered to have the finest powder snow in the country. There are many good quality Asahikawa hotels in the city as well as excellent restaurants and nightlife. It is popular for visitors to stay in the city during the night and go skiing or snowboarding in the mountains by day.
