To the west of Tokyo lies the mountainous region of Hakone and its beautiful district of Sengokuhara. This is the home of Japanese natural icons like Mt Fuji and Lake Ashi, and outdoor enthusiasts will find a wealth of hiking trails, parks and other fun recreational pursuits here. There is a lot of volcanic activity in Hakone, so many travellers make a point to visit the Great Boiling Valley or soak their bones in one of the many natural hot springs in the area. Lake Ashi is the ideal spot for those photogenic Mt Fuji shots when the weather is clear, and is just minutes from Sengokuhara. There are also some excellent hiking trails that start off right at the lake. Some of the best Sengokuhara hotels are traditional Japanese inns situated at the hot springs. While not exactly cheap, these charismatic accommodations give visitors an authentic Japanese experience that is well worth checking out.
