Introduction to Gifu - City Centre
The city of Gifu is situated in Gifu Prefecture in Japan. It is a beautiful historic city with fantastic buildings, parks and museums set amid spectacular mountain scenery. This quintessential Japanese city began life in the 15th century during the Sengoku period. There are plenty of Gifu City Centre hotels around the heart of the city to suit all budgets. The best way to get around Gifu is by bus as the local bus service is easy to use and goes to all the city's main attractions. Gifu Castle, on the top of Mount Kinka, was originally built in 1201 as a fortress. It has stunning architecture and is accessible on foot or by ropeway from Gifu Park, in the centre of the city. The Nagara River flows through the centre of Gifu, and here visitors can watch cormorant fishing. Otherwise known as ukai, this fishing is conducted every night from May to October when the river is at its highest. Ukai has been practiced for over 1,300 years and involves tying a snare on a cormorant's throat, which means the bird is unable to swallow large fish. The bird flies off to hunt then when it returns, it spits out the fish it cannot swallow. At the beginning of the ukai season, performances are held with traditional Japanese drumming and a firework display.
