Introduction to Fukushima, Japan
The city of Fukushima suffered at the hands of the 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami and nuclear crisis. Before this time, the city was a popular spot for those looking to relax in local onsen (hot springs) in a laid-back and peaceful location with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the Surikami River. The most visited of the city’s onsen are Izaka Hot Springs, Takayu Hot Springs, Shin-Noji Hot Springs and Tsuchiyu Hot Springs. The amazing natural attraction of Five Colored Lakes, each lake of which is a different colour due to mineral deposits leftover from a volcanic eruption in the 1800s, is beautiful. The Buddhist site of Iwaya-Kannon overlooks the city with its 60 Buddha images sculpted into the rock face. Cherry blossom fever takes over the city in spring, with the best place to snap pictures of this amazing quintessentially Japanese sight being Hanamiyama Park.
