In addition to being the capital of the Fukuoka prefecture and sharing the same name, Fukuoka is also has the largest city population on Japan’s Kyushu Island. For tourists the city can be split in to two main centres, Hakata and Tenjin. There is good accommodation in both but the more luxurious Fukuoka hotels in Hakata. The advantage of staying in the hotels in Fukuoka situated in the Tenjin region is that they are best placed for entertainment. Both locations have tourist offices and attractions in the city are easy to reach by using the subway system. It is easy to forget that you are on the coast in Fukuoka and the Bayside Place Hakata Pier makes an interesting afternoon out. There are excellent city and port views from the Hakata Port Tower. From Fukuoka hotels in the city heading for one of the nearby beaches, like Mitoma, makes for a relaxing day.
