Introduction to Fukui, Japan

The ancient city of Fukui lost much of its original architectural heritage to Allied bombing during WWII but this community of some 270,000 people has still managed to retain its vibrant atmosphere. The city is home to several of Japan's popular attractions, including the ruins of a castle town once ruled by the Asakura clan. This 500-year-old site is located amid stunning natural beauty and offers a great family trip. The city's Yokokan Garden is so beautiful that it has even been featured in the US media. Just a few hundred metres away from the gardens lie two castle compounds. Though the original castles were destroyed, the moats and huge walls are impressive. From hotels in Fukui, most of the key attractions in the city centre can easily be reached on foot. Transport links here are excellent. The main railway station is a major stop for several railway lines. The Hokuriki Expressway links the city with others, as do several other major highways.
