Island hopping: aside from spending time in the city itself, visiting some of the surrounding islands is something you must do in Venice. The Lido is most popular for those wanting to relax on the beach or do some shopping. Murano is known the world over for its glass making and Burano is another attractive island well known for producing lace. If you have time, then consider visiting the slightly quieter Torcello.
Take a private Gondola ride: a gondolier gliding his passengers through the canals is perhaps the most recognisable image of Venice and it is certainly a very special experience.
Lose yourself in Venice’s Street: while Venice is most famous for travelling around on the water, it is also a great city to walk around. There is some stunning architecture to be seen and many great sights to enjoy away from the crowds of St Mark’s Square. Take a map and just start to wonder around some of the many smaller alleyways and squares, stopping for a cafe break when you get the chance.
Go on a ghost walking tour: there are some companies who organise night-time walking tours entertaining you through the less well known areas of the city with some chilling ghost stories. It’s a great way to discover the beauty of Venice at night as well as to get a deeper understanding of the history as well as be introduced to some of the great characters and legends that dominated Venetian life over the years.
