The major attractions in Venice are dominated by the churches and some of the numerous examples of fine Italian architecture. The Canal Grande has some of the most impressive architecture and a boat trip here is a must. The famous St Mark’s Square is an easily recognisable sight, but can get very busy. There is much more to explore on the quieter alleys of the city however.
Venice has some fine museums and galleries, with the Marciano museum, located in the Basilica di San Marco, considered to be the museum highlight of a trip here. With the water playing such an important part in Venice’s life and history, it will be no surprise to find an interesting naval museum here as well.
Nightlife in Venice tends to be slightly more sedate than other European cities, with a few glasses of wine and some classic music much more common than wild nights out.
The Venetian lagoon provides plenty of options for day trips; The Lido is popular for those looking to relax on the beach or enjoy some stylish shopping, while Burano and Murano, famous for lace making and glassmaking respectively, have a pleasant laid back feel. Keeping on the land the hills surrounding the city are great for exploring.
