April Festivals
Festa di San Marco: takes place in April and celebrates the feast day of St Mark, the patron saint of Venice, with local tradition dictating that men give a bunch of roses to their loved ones. To mark the festival there is a gondoliers’ regatta as well as the Lion of St Mark’s golf championships.
May Festivals
Festa della Sensa: this May feast is the Feast of Ascension and is highlighted by a number of regattas taking place on the waters of the Lido.
September Festivals
Venice Film Festival: the oldest film festival in the world has been taking place here in September since 1932 with the main awards being the Leone d’Oro (Golden Lion) and the Coppa Volpi.
November Festivals
Festa della Madonna della Salute: this November festival involves a procession of boats on the Grand Canal to the Basilica di Santa Maria dell Salute to thank the Madonna for rescuing the city from the horrors of the great plague in 1631.
Festa Di San Martino: this festival, also in November, sees children roaming the streets, rather like trick or treating at Halloween.
