Chiesa dei Frari: is one of the oldest churches in Venice and was built to replace a previous church that was once on this same site. The original church dates back to the 13th century, with Chiesa dei Frari built in the mid 15th century.
The church is most known for its magnificent interior which includes a number of impressive works of art, including some by Giovanni Bellini and Titian. It’s a huge structure, and certainly worth a visit. There are a number of other things of interesting inside include a statue completed by Donatello.
Canal Grande: local people will tell you that Canal Grand is the most beautiful street in all of Venice and it’s not hard to see why it has earned this tag. Canal Grande has some of the most stunning displays of architecture that Venice has to offer. A boat trip here is a must, either in the daytime, when you can really concentrate on the architectural details, or by night which has a wonderful romantic atmosphere.
Santa Maria della Salute: is the focal point on the Grand Canal and one of the most famous attractions in Venice. This remarkable octagon shaped church was built between 1631 and 1681 and is part made of ‘marmorino’.
Chiesa di San Sebastiano: this 16th century church is well known as the home to some works of the artist Paolo Veronese. Much of the interior of the church, including the ceiling, is decorated with Veronese’s masterpieces.
Some of the pieces here are thought to be among the most impressive that Veronese ever painted and in fact the church is the last resting place of the artist. Titian also decorates the inside of the church and close to the entrance you can see his ‘San Nicolo’ painting.
The church as it is today was not completed until the 15th century having taken the best part of a hundred years to build and saw a significant amount of restoration in the early 20th century. Close to the church is the splendid Monumento di Bartolomeo Colleoni, a striking sculpture by Verrocchio.
