Rome Travel Guide - Things To Do

Climb Janiculum Hill: is the 2nd highest hill in the Rome vicinity, but its position outside of the ancient city boundaries means it dœesn’t feature in the proverbial Seven Hills of Rome. However, the views from here are breathtaking and some of the best in Rome. The hill was once the focal point for the cult of the god of Janus.
You will also find the Church of San Pietro in Montorio here, which was built on the site once thought to be where the crucifixion of St Peter took place and there is a small shine built by Donato Bramante, called the Tempietto. The baroque fountain found here was built in the late 17th century.
Stall holders begin setting up first thing in the morning and there is a wonderful buzz to the place, not only can you buy some superb fruit and vegetables, you can also witness plenty of banter between stallholders and their customers. In the evening, the eateries and wine bars set tables up outside, making a popular place to spend some time.
Re-create the splendours of ancient Rome at the Roman Forum: the Roman Forum (Foro Romano) was the heart of ancient Rome, where commerce, politics, prostitution, and administration took place. Today the area is a range of ruins with columns, marble, and outlines of buildings all in evidence.
Take an archaeological tour of the city: there are a number of options for walking tours in the city, but armed with a map it’s easily possible to organise your own walking tour, taking in some of the most impressive sights and of course allowing for plenty of cafe stops. Two must sees are the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.
The Trevi fountain is known the world over and is the largest and most striking of Rome’s Baroque fountains. Don’t forget to throw a coin into the fountain. The Spanish Steps run from the Piazza di Spagna to the Piazza, Trinita dei Monti, and consist of 138 steps in the early 18th century, and today are decorated with beautiful flowers.
Perhaps the best option, and certainly the most romantic, is to take an evening dinner cruise. There are a number of boats offering such trips, some of which include live music and wonderful food.
