Rome Travel Guide
Metro: there are two lines; A (red) and B (blue), which intercept at the Stazione Termini. It is the most efficient way to get around the city, but unfortunately the network is not very extensive. Much of ancient Rome lies underground, meaning it is impossible for the metro to serve the historic districts of the city.
The Metro operates from 05:30 to 23:30, running an hour later on Saturdays. Tickets can be bought at newsstands, newsagents, or from machines, and should be validated before boarding the train.
Taxi: Rome is not the easiest city to hail a taxi on the street, as the taxis tend to wait at designated taxi stands, although if you see one you can hail it down. It is also possible to book a taxi in advance by phone. Taxis offer various different fares according to time of day, baggage, and whether you are travelling inside or outside the city limits.
Visitors are advised to stick to licensed taxis which are usually yellow or white and have a sign on the roof. Unlicensed taxis are illegal; they don’t run meters and can end up being a big headache.
