Pisa Travel Guide
A number of architectural wonders fill the city with the charms of the old world while several museums document the fascinating history of the city and showcase an impressive selection of artwork.
Leaning Tower (Torre Pendente): is the main tourist attraction in Pisa, located in Piazza del Duomo. The tower is Pisa Cathedral’s bell tower and was recently opened to public after years of extensive stabilisation. The ‘lean’ effect was caused by the condition of sand foundations on one side of the tower.
Baptistery (Battistero): is the largest baptistery in the country, with a detailed interior and a fascinating drum constructed in Romanesque and Gothic styles. A huge dome and carved font are also very impressive. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch an acoustic performance which the baptistery is famous for.
Piazza dei Cavalieri: welcomes visitors to one of the most important piazzas in Pisa. An open space leads to the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri. Shopping enthusiasts will find the place even more interesting as the square connects to Palazzo dell'Orologio and Borgo Stretto, a bustling shopping street.
The National Museum of St Matthew: makes for an interesting spot for those into arts. The museum, housed in a charming old convent, features a number of paintings and sculptures dating from the 12th to 18th century.
Botanical Garden: botanical gardens are situated close to the Leaning Tower. Enjoy a walk around the pretty gardens on your own or join a guided tour that will take you into the world of various plant species.
