As well as its numerous fashion houses, the city boasts what is considered to be the most beautiful shopping mall in the world; the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. La Scala opera house (Teatro della Scala), is without doubt one of the world’s most famous opera venues and the Gothic Duomo is one of the largest churches in the world.
The pace of progress is frenetic in Milan, moving it forward at warp speed, and forsaking the leisurely lifestyle that is so much a part of the social culture of most of Italy.
The central part of the city is organised around four squares: Piazza Cairoli, Piazza Cordusio, Piazza Duomo and Piazza san Babila. Milan’s modern civic centre lays to the north-west, in the area around the gigantic train station built by Mussolini in 1931, an area of skyscrapers dominated by the sleek Pirelli Tower. Around the Porta Genova station is the Fiera district, the fashion hub.
