The festivities are held at Piazza Duomo, and are becoming increasingly popular, featuring costumed parades and an all-round party atmosphere for more than a week leading up to the event. If you’re in Italy and plan to visit Venice for its famous pre-Lenten event, there’s still plenty of time to travel to Milan to take in the festivities here.
In the spring and then again in the fall, the top designers showcase their collections on the catwalk at Milan’s Fashion Week events. Celebrity spotting is great fun during these weeks, but the shows themselves are by invitation only. Many peripheral events are organised for visitors however, to allow others to become involved in the fashion world’s activities during this time.
The main venue is the Fiera Milano Exhibition Centre and scheduling is during February and March and then again in September and October.
May Festivals
Milano Cortili Aperti: private residences are open to the public on this special Sunday in mid-May. This is a once-a-year opportunity to see the interiors of some of the city’s grandest residences in the historical centre, as well as their courtyards and gardens.

This is a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping and is a big favourite with the children. The Saint's feast day also marks the opening of La Scala’s season, with great fanfare at the world’s most prominent opera house. Everything takes place around the Basilica di San Ambrogio and at La Scala, in early December.
No Fixed Date
Antiques Market: the Naviglio Grande is Milan’s oldest canal, constructed in the 12th century and stretching the distance between the Via Valenza Bridge and the Darsena of Porta Ticinese. On the last Sunday of each month, around 400 vendors set up their stalls along the canal banks offering up books, clocks, dolls, furniture, jewellery, porcelain, silver and many collector's items.
