Florence Travel Guide - Getting Around

If you intend to visit some of the more outlying attractions, there is an excellent bus network, which covers most of the city and surrounding area. This would be the least expensive public transport option, although taxis and tourist coaches are plentiful.
Train: service is limited to trains arriving and departing Florence’s main rail station: no train service is available within the city. The main station is Stazione Santa Maria Novella, located just north-west of the city centre.
Bus: ATAF is the local bus operator, serving most of the city, the suburbs and several nearby towns. Buses are bright orange in colour and very reasonably priced, running from early morning to 21:30: some buses operate as late as 01:00.
The main station from which all service originates is the Santa Maria Novella Station. Tickets must be purchased in advance, at newsstands or tobacconists displaying the bus company’s logo.
