Local cuisine
Traditional local specialities include creamy fegatini (a chicken liver spread) and ribollita (minestrone soup served with bread, beans and olive oil). Beef is a favourite, and bistecca alla fiorentina, a huge T-bone steak weighing as much as 900 grams is not considered extraordinary.
A meal out is often followed by a visit to a wine bar (enoteca), where a local Chianti is enjoyed. Gelato (Italian ice cream) is hugely popular in Florence and there are ice cream vendors selling it where you can try all sorts of exotic concoctions, including garlic ice cream.
You can choose to dine in style or choose a quick meal on-the-go from the inexpensive food windows found in many areas. Once you’re outside the historical centre, food quality is more dependable and prices are usually significantly lower.
